According to the trend report authored by April Heinrichs in FIFA's Technical Report, the Women's World Cup Germany 2011 showed emergence of a trends in formations.
There was growth in the use of the 4-2-3-1 system, with a variation on the attack that looks like a 4-3-3 and on the defence a 4-5-1. This was used by quarterfinalists England, France and Germany.
Other quarterfinalists Australia, Japan, Sweden and the USA all mostly used the classic 4-4-2 system. The exception was quarterfinalists Brazil who used their 3-4-3 formation.
