According to the Women’s World Cup Germany 2011 television
audience report posted by FIFA*, Canada's average live match audience increased from
51,000 people in 2007 to 390,000 in 2011 (CBC network).
There was almost four times the coverage on Canadian
television compared to the 2007 tournament. Matches were aired during the day
as opposed to late night in 2007, as a result there was a significant increase
in audience reach (5.8m). The graph below shows Canada accounted for almost a third (31%) of the coverage in the region with more than double the coverage of the next highest nation (USA).
With the 2015 Women’s World Cup coming to Canada, a strong 2012 Olympic result with a bronze medal and growing popularity of the player personalities, the television audience should see further growth in 2015.
