A key element to the FA's five-year "Game Changer" strategy is to continue to invest and develop the FA Women's Super League and in 2014 create a second division. The semi-professional FA WSL was launched in 2011 (as a club licensing model) to provide quality competition for England's best female players. The league is sponsored by Continental, is covered by ESPN (weekly highlights and live games) and provides positive female role models for the youth player.
A new women's league and competitions unit will oversee the development of the FA WSL, the FA Women's Cup and the complete women's football league pyramid (image taken from the FA Plan document):
The FA will support a maximum of 20 FA WSL clubs across two divisions who will work with the FA Centres of Excellence to provide pathways for talent.
“We have looked into the impact of The FA WSL and are delighted to be able to expand a competition format that is driving playing standards and improving awareness of the women’s game. We will work closely with the women’s leagues throughout the country to implement a clear and consistent system.” - Sue Hough, Chairman of the FA Women’s Committee.
